5 Days to Go!!!>>>>>>

Our Christmas Concert went well with over 30 parents; grandparents... there.

Soon I'll be in the air again heading for Toronto, Canada.

as Muslim holidays are not firmly set.

Thursday, Dec.20th I leave Egypt at 5:20 am and arrive in Toronto around 3:40 pm. ...with the change of time and a stop over in Frankfurt.

Arrive back Jan. 12th. Start school on Jan 13th... and with 1/3 January gone and 1/3 June gone +
mid-term break in March...There is only about 5 months left...
and I will be saying "Good Bye" to Egypt...and back to Toronto.

I will REALLY miss the Children.
They have been delightful....and I know the parents will miss me.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS ONE & ALL!

SEE YOU IN 2008 !

FINALLY...DECISION MADE!!!!!

It took me a long time and a lot of thought to make my decision...even though I had started packing a couple of weeks ago!!! So, deep inside, I must have known the answer.

I know parents will be sad...some even wanted me to teach their other child in September '08.

I love the little children I have been teaching and the parents are wonderful.

I had seriously thought about teaching in another country, to visit new horizons, however my age won't allow this as many countries discriminate when it comes to age.

The year I left Canada, (4 months later) the law was passed that no person could be discriminated against- according to age.

I will be home for the Christmas holidays. I am sure the 3 weeks will fly by.

I am looking forward to Christmas dinner at Winston and Kevin's place and a special dinner at Karen and Samantha's.

Then almost less than 5 months and I will be back in Toronto.

Haven't quite decided what the next step will be.

There must be a plan out there somewhere!!!!!

C U Soon.............

I can't believe it..It is over a month since my last entry!!!!

Yes!!! Time Flies!!!

Life is never dull....

It was so cute to see the children...mostly Egyptian.. dressed up

for Halloween. Even at 3 years of age they enjoyed the

experience. Some were cats; some spiderman; some princess;

some Pharoh's ...etc

Halloween is not a custom here however being an American

school we celebrate it. We had a parade through the Elementary

part of the school. In the afternoon the children went to various

classes for activities and to several offices to "Trick or Treat".

Then a party and art work to take home.

No time for nap today!....I took some great photos.

My two sons Kevin & Winston came from Canada to visit. We

had a great time going to see the Museum; the Pyramids and

Sphinx at Giza and Step Pyramids at Seqqara. Lunch at the

Mena House... Dinner at Barry's...off to the Tailors to make

hand-made shirts.....Coptic Cairo... Khan Khalili...dinner at

Naguib Mahfouz....Silver shopping; Galabyea shopping...

Dinner at the Concorde Hotel...A Day trip to Alexandria...dinner

at a famous Fish place..... and "order in" dinner at my place.

Then Kevin & Winston were off on a Nile cruise.

Safe return back to Canada.

I thanked the person who arranged the Cruise and said I

thought it was the highlight of their trip.  Kevin wrote back that

"seeing me was the highlight of their trip".!

Well, didn't my heart skip a beat !!!

Just a week ago I was given another assistant rather than a

helper which I needed.  It lightens the load.

I finished my report cards and this coming week is parent

interviews.  Photo day was yesterday.

I am in the second year of a two year contract and by December

1st ..I need to let the school know if I will return. We are going to

learn about incentives to encourage us to stay!

Only 40 more days and I will be home for Christmas so I am

already making plans.

Well, I am enjoying my weekend of extra rest..bubble bath and

relaxing.  Sending hugs your way!

2 1/2 months and I will be home for Christmas.

....Looking forward to the 3 week holiday.

....I have been told that if I get 1 more pupil...I will get another

Helper. That will save the day!

I am adding some more photos of the pupils tonight.

Right now we are in Ramadan so the pupils are busy making Lanterns.

....Looking forward to Kevin and Winston's visit the end of October.

They will be going on a Nile cruise....and other sightseeing.

....I'm back to my weight before the summer of ..07 with over

60 lunches / dinners.  ...That makes me feel good.

Take care......

14........no!!!.....15 .....Three year olds.......Cute!!

Yes! That's how many little ones in my class.
More than double last year.

Tears on some, yet don't want to leave when mommy comes to get them...having too good a time.

So much to learn...how to get in a straight line...how to listen...
How to take turns..... how to clean up......Life is a challenge even for a 3 year old.!!!!!

Just keep track of what's going on by the photos and updates..
must go and do some planning. Thank goodness I have Miss Heba my assistant. She saves the day!

Time sure does fly!

It's 10 months since I arrived in Cairo, Egypt and I have just about completed 1 school year of teaching.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Pre-Kindergarten class
and look forward to the second year of my contract.

Only 11 more days of teaching and 25 more days 'till
I fly away to visit with Family & Friends.

I have spent time setting up 25 lunches /dinners with family and friends; setting up Dr. /Dentist Appointments..car maintenance, etc......

It has been almost a month since my last entry...

Busy times...last weekend I was out for dinner at Planet Africa with a pupil and his parents - Excellent food!
and conversation. On Saturday, I went to a Birthday party for one of my pupils...quite an affair including face painting; bubbles which cover the whole person; Barney was there too.
At school we had "Sport's day" and the children wore their bathing suits and ran through the sprinkler; also threw wet sponges at targets...etc.. see some fun photos.

I am more than half packed and plan my days so that I am on track of what needs to be done.

Fw: Israel..rich in History..... a Miracle ... Time for Rest & Relaxation

Surprise! I am getting back to my Blog. Last entry...March 22 nd, 2007.
 Believe me, Time Flies!!!

Easter Break - April 6th to 9th - I traveled with 7 other teachers to Israel. So much variety in the land itself from snow-capped mountains, fertile valleys, arid and desolate regions of desert, sparkling lakes and seaside resorts...all these can be found within the boundaries of Israel.

I saw the hustle and bustle of towns, noisy local markets, the sanctity of holy places and a close association with the Bible.

While driving to Jerusalem we toured on the way..going to the Ahava Factory and the Mineral Beach at the Dead Sea.
We stayed at the Lev Yerushalayim Hotel which was in downtown Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is holy to Judaism,Christianity and Islam. It is undoubtedly the jewel in the crown that is Israel.

The Old City of Jerusalem - is composed of four quarters, each with its own distinctive characteristics. The Christian Quarter is in the north-west; the Moslem Quarter in the
north-east; the Armenian Quarter in the south-west, and the Jewish Quarter in the south-east.

After breakfast, we drove to the Mount of Olives via Mount Scopus. Here it was that Jesus taught His disciples during His mission in Jerusalem.
We had an excellent Tour Guide - Suzanne - from suztours @gmail.com. She has been guiding tours for 26 years!

Included in our tour this day was The tomb of Prophets, The Church of Dominus Flevit -The Lord Wept....and Gethsemane with its grove of olive trees dating back to Byzantine times. Situated there is the Church of All Nations.

We next went to Lion's Gate for the Old City Christian walking tour. We visited St. Ann's Church, and the Pools of Bethesda.

For lunch we stopped at the Armenian Cafeteria.

Afternoon we were walking and touring the Via Dolorosa  (The Way of the Cross commemorating  the path which Jesus walked) and the famous Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Some of my photos still need to be titled. Beautiful memories. In the meantime..How many can you recognize?

Sunday being Easter Sunday.. I chose to go with the group to Sunrise Service on the Mt. of Olives. It was a memorable experience. At the poignant part of the service the sun was rising.

In the afternoon, most of us went to the Jewish Quarter containing reconstructed synagogues and yeshiva  together with modern apartment buildings and houses.
We visited the Western Wall which is never deserted. At any hour of the day or night, winter or summer, one can always find Jews there, standing in front of the Wall in devout prayer - or placing their messages in the cracks and crevices between the stones.

Our last day we went to the Qumran where the most stunning biblical archaeological find took place in 1947 when a young Bedouin boy unknowingly discovered a hoard of ancient manuscripts, the Dead Sea Scrolls high up in a cave.

Our last tour was of the Masada, where we went to the top in a cable-car. Herod's stronghold is set on a wide plateau
overlooking the Dead Sea. We saw the many rooms in Herod's Palace including the bath house; the sauna; the storerooms; the lower terrace showing wall paintings and swimming pool!

Then tired and somewhat overwhelmed at so much history we said "Au Revoir"  to Suzanne and Hamed (our driver)and set out for our journey back to Cairo.

A Miracle:

When a mother of one of my students sent my BLOG to Doctors at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia...They have now been using my BLOG as one of their tools to asses this child....He came to school as a very timid child, seldom speaking and only then in a whisper. He has blossomed into a very active boy who speaks loudly and enjoys school life with his peers.

Many THANKS to Cheryl who gave me this BLOG as a Farewell gift before I took off from Toronto to Cairo.
Family & Friends are enjoying the News!

************************************************

A few more days to Holiday.... April 25th to 28th ....another time to Rest & Relax!

I went to Sharm El Sheikh with a teacher who had a Time-Share at The Dive Inn Resort.  It is situated in a unique location on the Om el Sid Hill. The weather was beautiful!
Lazing by the pool and going out for dinners to the Ritz Carlton and The Concorde took up most of out time.
We also shopped in Naama Bay

Sharm El Sheikh is situated where the Suez and Aquaba gulfs meet. It is a paradise for divers finding brightly colored fish, corals and sponges. Also, fascinating wrecks - the intriguing remains of ships..

Sharm El Sheikh has played host to a number of important conferences and various international summits.
To sum it up.......... The sea, sun and history of a gem set in the Red Sea between a splendid underwater world and the ancient mystery of the desert.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! ...March 21st, 2007

Yes!, Yesterday was Mother's Day here in Egypt and it is one of the biggest days of the year.

At school, the Kindergarten classes had a "Mother's Day Tea" and the children in my class - my 3 year olds - sang 5 songs and did an Irish Jig.
"Brown Squirrel; Eency weency spider; The wheels on the Bus; My dearest Friend; I love you Mommy and the Irish Jig."
The mothers, grandmothers, aunts and nannies were thrilled...especially the mothers. Take a look at the photos. (My Shining Stars)

I received several lovely gifts from the children and they made a bouquet of flowers, a necklace, a Mother's Day card and their Hand Print for their mother.

I thought of MY mother - the best in the world...and my daughter who is a most wonderful Mother to Samantha- my grand daughter..

****** ONLY 88 more days and I will be at home in Toronto, Canada visiting relatives and friends for a couple of months.

Many THANKS to Art who put a comment on my BLOG. It is easy to do. Anyone can click on "comment"
below each update and you will see directions on how to leave a comment.

The latest plans are to go to Jerusalem at Easter. There are 8 teachers making this amazing trip.

April 24th I will go to a resort - Sharm El Sheikh on the Red Sea
- a place where they hold conferences and various international summits.
It is one of the top diving spots in the world - although I won't be doing that!!
One of the teachers has a time-share there.

Some parents have invited me to a Nile cruise dinner in April.

This week I received my Christmas present from my sister, Ronnie, which was mailed on November 26th, 2006 and arrived March 20th, 2007.
It had been opened and the Christmas wrap off and even the card opened and then sealed with Arabic message tape.
They must be searching for something as almost everything I receive is delivered the same way.
It was Tea made in Egypt!!!!...bought in Toronto !!!
I had a cup right away. Very delicious.
What a surprise!!
Then today I received another Christmas present from friends mailed December 7th, 2006 and arrived March 21st!!
Something is coming tomorrow.so it's Christmas in March!!!
As mentioned in my last entry, my Girlfriend from Toronto, Marjory, was here and we went on a Nile Cruise from Luxor to Aswan for 4 nights and 5 days.
It was wonderful! We visited many temples as you will see in the photos...The immense Temples of Karnak and Luxor. we saw the intriguing Necropolis on the opposite West Bank, including the spectacular Hatshepsut's Temple; The impressive Valley of the Kings; the great Collosi of Memmon and Tomb of Tut-ankh-Amun were very interesting.
We sailed along the river Nile to Kom Ombo to visit the temple dedicated to the Gods Sobek and Horus.
We continued to Edffu to visit the temple considered to be the best-preserved cult temple in Egypt, dedicated to the falcon headed God Horus.
Continuing on we visited the High Dam, crossing the original barrage over the First Cataract, and stopped to look at the magnificent and impressive unfinished obelisk.
Then on we sailed to Aswan where we saw opposite, just north of Kitchener's island, many tombs of princes, governors and other dignitaries of ancient Yebu.
We visited the Sofitel Cataract Hotel and saw some of the magnificent Suites. This is the hotel where they have a room that Agatha Christie stayed when she was writing the book "Death on the Nile" and also the movie was filmed there. Winston Churchill stayed in a suite there.
We sailed in a felucca (boat) to a Nubian village to experience life of the local people.
We toured the Temple of Philae and the marvelous Temple of Ramses II and his wife Nefetari.
The "Perfumery Al Hussain" welcomed us to the world of Aromatherapy. We learned so much about Essential Oils....and of course bought some!!
The next day we took an all day trip to Alexandria and toured the Citadel of Quatbay and the very modern Alexandria Library and Museum.
Added to this...we saw the pyramids at Giza including the Light and Sound Show; shopped till we dropped; saw Coptic Cairo and the first Synagogue; the Khan Khalili Market/Bazaar and saw many other highlights together.
Marjory was here for 2 weeks.
I have added photos of the trip.
Kevin and Winston will be visiting in October so I am really looking forward to their visit.
I went to an amazing evening of Irish dance from Ireland called "Reel Rhythm"..on Wednesday.
I enjoyed it. I went with 3 teachers from the school and we went for dinner to a restaurant that was around in the 1900's for dinner.
Recently I joined a fitness club at a swishy Hotel nearby. It is within walking distance.
Another event coming up is a formal Dinner in the desert near the pyramids.
I have tons to add to my Blog about my India and Nepal trip ...however will do a little at a time.

Words of Wisdom!

I sure have been busy what with Valentine's Day
lead up; Planning for a girlfriend's visit on Feb. 28th; Planning for a Nile Cruise...... and even planning for a visit back home to Toronto in June, July and  August.

So......hopefully "the plan" is to add more photos of my trip to India & Nepal (there are lots more!) next weekend.

In the meantime I've added several of "My Shining Stars"......

and... I like these WORDS of Wisdom:
What Teachers Make....

WHAT TEACHERS MAKE

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.

One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"  He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?"

Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make? (She paused for a second, and then began...) "Well let’s see, for starters, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.  I make a C+ feel like the Medal of Honor.

I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental... (She paused again then went on)

I make kids wonder. / I make them question.

I make them criticize. / I make them apologize and mean it.

I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions.

I teach them to write and then I make them write.

I make them read, read, read.

I make them show all their work in math.

I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity.

I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe.

I make my students stand and sing “O Canada”, because we live in Canada.

Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.

(Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.)
"Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant... Do you want to know what I make?

I MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!
What do you make?" ……………..THERE IS MUCH TRUTH IN THIS STATEMENT: "Teachers make every other profession.
